In the beginning of December it was revealed that after only 2 months since their debut, rookie group Twice had already managed to rack up a total of 10 CF deals. As some who considers themselves a pretty big Twice fan, I was really excited to see that these girls were already able to find so much success, so early into their debut. However, with the unveiling of their most recent CF, I'm starting to have some concerns with the way JYPE is marketing them.
On December 18th, phone company LG, uploaded a commercial to their Youtube Channel LG U Plus starring Twice's maknae Tzuyu.
When I first watched the video, I thought it was super cute, although I was a bit concerned with the fact that while Nayeon and Jeongyeon make appearances at the end of the video, it was clearly very Tzuyu centric. In my opinion, it's a bit too earlier for the members of Twice to be getting solo deals, especially if they want to avoid the popularity dynamic of Suzy and Miss A.
After watching, I scrolled down into the comment section and noticed people were mentioning some type of "Sexy Version" of this video. So I went to their channel, and clicked on the video, and was surprised to see 16-year-old Tzuyu ripping off a full length trench coat to reveal a black crop top with hot pants to match followed by her performing hyuna-esqe dance moves in an elevator. LG must have released their mistake because within hours the video was made private.
Now before I get into the issue I would like to preface this by saying there is nothing wrong with a female idol being sexy. And to Tzuyu fans I saw trying to defend this on various forums and social media, NOBODY, I REPEAT NOBODY IS CRITIZING TZUYU. What we're criticizing is the way JYPE is choosing to market a 16 year old minor.
Ever since her Sixteen days, Tzuyu has managed to garner a lot of attention thanks to her stunning looks. Despite there being a surplus of beautiful girls in Twice, she is able to stand out. due to her offering a very mature kind of beauty. But what seems to be happening is that JYPE, and the industry in general is letting the maturity of her looks out weight the maturity of her age. Take for example, the way they dress her in comparison to fellow member Nayeon. At 20 years old,Nayeon is the oldest member, but because of her cute features and "innocent aura" they often dress her in much "younger" attire.

I'll admit that most of her past looks (sans the Elle shoot) have gotten by with nothing more than a side eye from me because everything was always done with a "cute image" undertone. But with this most recent CF, JYPE has made it pretty clear exactly who they are trying to market Tzuyu towards, and I find it pretty disturbing and exploitative. We unfortunately live in a world where there will always be older creeps more than happy to fantasize about her, but catering to that crowd with things like this CFis not the way to go. Just take a look at some comments about the video from the male dominated site MLBPark:

Tzuyu may look mature but at the end of the day she's a young girl so think JYPE should be more responsible regarding the way they promote her. Just let her be a kid while she still can.
